CARTHAGE, N.C. (AP) — Two power substations in a North Carolina county were damaged by gunfire in what is being investigated as a criminal act, causing damage that could take days to repair and leaving tens of thousands of people without electricity, authorities said.

The Clinton Fire Department has begun a new training academy to help prepare local firefighters and new hires for their Firefighter 1 certification. After the inaugural class, department leaders say they plan to host the academy as needed for new hires and volunteers alike.

An Elk City man was critically injured in a two-car collision that claimed the lives of three people Wednesday evening on U.S. Highway 281, almost five miles north of Gracemont.

Clinton Public Schools has recognized six support staff members from across the district as Support Staff of the Year. The district winner will be announced during a ceremony set to be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 21 at Clinton Middle School.

AllianceHealth Clinton has announced plans to discontinue some operations at the Clinton hospital to prepare for its lease expiring Dec. 31. The announcement came as a surprise to city leaders as they continue to work with AllianceHealth and Carrus Health during the transition between hospital managers.
