SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — About 600 people alive today can't have children because California's government sterilized them either against their will or without their knowledge, and now the state is trying to find them so it can pay them at least $15,000 each in reparations.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Northern California residents are bracing for another round of powerful storms this week after flooding from a New Year's Eve deluge killed one person, prompted the evacuation of more than 1,000 inmates in a county jail and washed away a section of a levee system that protects mostly rural farmland.

Local citizen recognized

Jeremy Lund, right, was recognized by the Clinton Fire Department Friday for preventing major loss from a house fire by putting out flames with his fire extinguisher Dec. 18. The house fire had begun at his neighbor’s home and when he saw her run out of her house, he went to extinguish the flames just before the CFD arrived at the scene. Presenting the award to Lund is Lt. Joe Williams.

The Board of Custer County Commissioners discussed work being done through the Law Enforcement Trust at the Custer County Jail along with updates on the county’s hazard mitigation plan at its weekly meeting Tuesday.

With the temporary closing of the Clinton Hospital, emergency medical services across the area have been working to ensure the safety of residents in the event of a medical emergency. Plans in place include taking patients to the nearest hospital, whether that is Weatherford Regional Hospital, Cordell Memorial Hospital, or Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City, to receive needed emergency medical care and the addition of new field staff to help with longer calls.
