DEAR HARRIETTE: I’ve been an aunt since I was 9 years old. I am 29 now, the youngest of five sisters and an aunt to 11 nieces and nephews. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been the default babysitter. I live at home with my mom, which seems to be a prime location for all of my sisters when they need parental relief. Sometimes they show up unannounced or with short notice and simply tell me they need someone to watch their children for a few hours – or sometimes overnight. I think because I do not currently have a partner or children, they assume I am always home or available. If I tell them otherwise, they ask if my social engagements are as important as my nieces or nephews. I don’t like that they always expect me to cancel plans at their behest, but I’m not allowed to expect them to plan ahead.

At Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Custer County Board of County Commissioners, the Custer County Courthouse was closed Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr.

The Clinton Rotary Club will be hosting its yearly Rotary Chili Day Jan. 31 at the Frisco Center located at 101 S. 4th St. According to Rotary President Carolyn Heerwald, the day will feature chili made with Rotary member L.R. Sights’ recipe which will be offered with or without beans as well as Frito chili pie, and bratwurst. Lunch will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner will be available from 5-7 p.m. with tickets for either meal priced at $10 for adults and $8 for children under 12. Both serving times will also offer the meal to-go.
The new administrator for River Valley Skilled Nursing and Therapy returned a month ago to where her career started about 20 years ago when the facility was called Grace Living Center.
