Florida sees first local transmission of malaria

Dear Doctors: I was surprised to read that there have been several cases of locally acquired malaria diagnosed near my home in Florida. I didn't realize that we still have malaria in the United States. Is it widespread? I would appreciate information about symptoms to look out for.

The Clinton Public School district is currently awaiting three electric buses they have purchased in January with money awarded by the EPA. Multiple delays, whether in production or in part acquisition, has kept the buses from being delivered, but Transportation Director Jeff King says there is now an end date in sight.

Just two months until the scheduled reopening date of the Clinton Regional Hospital, the Clinton City Council moved during its regular meeting Tuesday to declare an emergency to exist regarding the urgent need to reopen the hospital to authorize the Clinton Hospital Authority to be exempted from the City’s competitive bidding ordinance in limited circumstances.

Ramifications of July storms continue as the City of Clinton works to bypass the damaged water tower located at the intersection of 18th Street and Broadway Avenue. With City crews working to take the tower offline, the Clinton City Council Tuesday approved the purchase of parts to bring a third skid into service at the City’s Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant which the City plans to use to help offset the offline tower. “The intersection of 18th Street and Broadway Avenue is torn up right now as we work on the bypass,” said Public Works Director Gene McCullough. “We know it’s inconvenient for the locals who live in that area, so we really want to thank them for their patience.”
