Wanda Louise Haunpo (Shelton) was born on April 27, 1953, in Anadarko, Oklahoma, to Charles “Jack” and Rose (Austin) Shelton. She peacefully passed away at her home in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the age of 73.
Wanda was raised in Snyder, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Snyder High School in 1970.
She later attended Alladin Beauty College in Altus and furthered her education at Caddo Kiowa Technology Center in Carnegie. Southwest Oklahoma remained home throughout her life, and she was proud of the community and the roots she established there.
Wanda began her career as a hairstylist before dedicating many years of service as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, retiring after a distinguished career.
Even in retirement, her compassionate heart led her to continue serving others through home health care, where her patience, kindness, and gentle spirit made a lasting impact on those she cared for.
She found great joy in gardening and was known for her remarkable green thumb. Wanda also loved knitting, baking homemade bread, and spending time with her beloved dogs. She will be remembered for her warm smile, unwavering strength, positive outlook, and caring heart. Independent and resilient, Wanda faced life’s challenges with grace and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles “Jack” and Rose Shelton, and her sister, Nita Kay Tibbs.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Scotty Lee Newman of Roosevelt and Christopher Lee Newman and his wife, Amy, of Wichita Falls, Texas; her daughter, Rebecca Ann Kendrick and her husband, Greg McKinney, of Lawton; her brother, Larry Shelton of Mustang; her sister, Margaret Smith of Roosevelt; six grandchildren, Nick Arrington, Tiffany Perry, Amanda Molone, Dalten Newman, Kenzley McKinney, and Lyncoln McKinney; and three greatgrandchildren, Kyzer Perry, Cooper Molone, and Avery Molone.
A Celebration of Life honoring Wanda will be held at a later date.
Service details will be announced once they have been finalized.
