Vernon Charles Chockpoyah, age 94, resident of the Clinton Veterans Center, was born April 30, 1931 in Lawton to James and Mae (Wauqua) Chockpoyah. He passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at the Clinton Veterans Center.

Vernon was raised in Walters, Oklahoma, where he developed the strong work ethic and patriotism that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from Lawton High School and later attended engineering and drafting school in Denver, Colorado.

With a deep sense of duty, Vernon proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force. After receiving an honorable discharge, he continued his military career by joining the United States Marine Corps. He served during the Korean Conflict while enlisted in both branches — a distinction he carried with great pride.

The military was more than a profession to Vernon; it was a calling. After completing his active service, he continued serving his country through Civil Service employment with the federal government in Eastaboga, Alabama.

His discipline, intelligence, and dedication earned him respect from coworkers and friends alike.

Vernon was a faithful member of Plum Springs Baptist Church in Alabama, where he enjoyed fellowship and worship.

He was a man full of historical knowledge and especially loved sharing stories from his years in the service. His sharp memory, quick wit, and engaging personality made him someone people enjoyed visiting with. He never met a stranger and always welcomed conversation.

Vernon was married three times. He was first married to Yvonne Simmons. In 1976, he married Stella English, and later married Vera Hearn in May of 1978 in Alabama. Throughout his life, he valued faith, family, and country.

Vernon’s life was marked by honor, service, and commitment. His legacy of patriotism and dedication will long be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 27, 2026 at the Hyman Memorial Chapel, located at the Lee Hometown Funeral Home, with Rev. Gerald Panana officiating. Services are under the direction of Lee Hometown Funeral Home.
