Dr. Curtis Phillip (Phil) Cunningham passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and three children on February 21st, 2021 at the age of 75 in Oklahoma City, OK.
Phil was born in Clinton, OK on January 27th, 1946. He grew up in Clinton and was an active member of the Boy Scouts, achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He worked on the family homestead farm during the summer and was a proud Red Tornado.
He left Clinton to attend Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, where he was a member of Beta Tau Beta Fraternity and enjoyed his time there as a Cowboy. After his undergraduate studies he moved to Memphis, TN to pursue his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Tennessee which was awarded in 1973. While in Memphis he met his first wife Dr. Madeleine W. Cunningham and they had three children together, Catherine Anne, Nicole Virginia, and Luke Curtis.
Phil practiced dentistry for 46 years and enjoyed the fellowship with his patients the most. He practiced dentistry throughout the state of Oklahoma and towards the end of his career found his love of teaching at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.
He was a dedicated member of the Methodist church with his membership most recently at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in downtown Oklahoma City. Even though he was an alum of Oklahoma State he was an OU fan through and through, attending football games every Saturday as a season ticket holder.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents Curtis and Bessie Cunningham, his many aunts and uncles and all his fur babies.
Phil is survived by his wife Linda Cunningham, his children Catherine Cunningham of Oklahoma City, Justin and Nicole Baldwin of Oklahoma City and Drs. Luke and Kathryn Cunningham of Oklahoma City, his grandchildren Finley Cunningham, Kate Baldwin, Mallory Baldwin, and Isabelle Cunningham, his sister Colleen Wilson of Plano, Texas, his niece Jennifer Wilson of Japan and nephew Tom Wilson of Santa Clara, CA.
His family will continue to remember him as a fun loving and gentle tempered soul that poured himself out for his family. He calmed all storms that were encountered and was a faithful guide in our lives.
Phil and Linda lived in Oklahoma City and were together for the past 37 years. Together they loved to travel to the southwest and parented numerous fur babies together. He was a loving son, brother, husband, and father and will be greatly missed by all.
The family will be holding a service to celebrate his life at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church on Friday, March 5th at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in the Sanctuary.
