Joe Cloninger recalls fateful night

“Shore patrol is screaming at me on the radio, ‘Man overboard! The boat has been hit! Man overboard!’ There were 149 sailors and marines on this mike boat. It was struck by a freighter that was coming in,” longtime Clintonite and former Navy Officer Joe Cloninger remembered about that fateful Jan. 17, 1977, night in Barcelona, Spain.

Farni serves Army in Military Police

Canute High School Class of 2012 graduate Anthony Farni finally fulfilled his dream of joining the U.S. Army in 2018, and he is currently stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, where he is now a specialist in the Military Police.

Miller joined U.S. Air Force at age 17

American Legion Post No. 41 Commander Donald Miller is a familiar face in Clinton, mostly due to his generous community involvement. But not everyone is aware of the many years this Clinton native spent traveling the world, first for 23 years while in the U.S. Air Force, and afterward.

Doug Greer earned numerous service awards

Originally from Enid, Clinton resident Doug Greer enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966. He attended basic training in San Diego, Calif., which he remembers well.

Survial training vital to U.S. Air Force

A torrential downpour covered a thickly forested mountain in western North Carolina. The drum of heavy raindrops pounding against leaves and ground drowned out all sound, save for a few expletives shouted out when unfortunate souls would slip on the mud while ascending a 55-degree incline on the waterlogged mountain.

Navy Medical Research contributing to COVID-19 fight

In early March, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio joined the fight against COVID-19 and future pandemic viruses by contributing knowledge from relevant studies and providing backup medical support at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC).

Deck department aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush installed one of two 30-ton anchors on the ship’s starboard side June 16, bringing the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier one step closer to completing its docking at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
