Joe Cloninger talks about that fateful night

“Shore patrol is screaming at me on the radio, ‘Man overboard! The boat has been hit! Man overboard!’ There were 149 sailors and marines on this mike boat. It was struck by a freighter that was coming in,” longtime Clintonite and former Navy Officer Joe Cloninger remembered about that fateful Jan. 17, 1977, night in Barcelona, Spain.

Rural Arapaho resident Jim R. Barton enlisted in the volunteer regular Army in 1963 and served until 1966. He also volunteered for airborne training when he joined up.

Donald Miller, U.S. Air Force

Former American Legion Post No. 41 Commander Donald Miller is a familiar face in Clinton, mostly due to his generous community involvement. But not everyone is aware of the many years this Clinton native spent traveling the world, first for 23 years while in the U.S. Air Force, and afterward.

Alvin M. Hatfield III grew up in Arapaho and graduated from high school in 1966.

Dwayne Funk was drafted into the Army at the age of 19 and selected to go into the Air Force. He served from 1970-1974, during the Vietnam War.
