Two young men were injured in a single-vehicle accident Sunday on Interstate 40 in Elk City.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Suede Hamel, 18, of Stillwater, was driving a Ford F250 pickup around 11 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lane of I-40 around mile marker 40 when the truck lost control, struck a guard rail and rolled two and a half times down an embankment. The truck went through a chainmail fence and landed upon its top.

Hamel was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City and then to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. He was admitted in stable condition with a head injury.

Ethan Deer, 18, of Perkins, was a passenger in the trunk. He was treated and released from the hospital in Elk City.

Both men were wearing seatbelts. The condition of the driver was listed as “apparently normal” and the cause of the accident was “too fast for snowy road condition.”

Trooper Tyler Smith investigated the accident and was assisted by Trooper Darrell Splawn and Trooper Chris Laufer, as well as the Elk City Fire Department and Elk City EMS.
