This was the scene shortly after the fog lifted in the Houston ship channel. Stains on the water from the oil spill are visible.

Several Clinton area cruisers caught by spill

Two separate families from the Clinton area found themselves delayed Sunday around the busy Houston ship channel over the weekend after a barge carrying nearly a million gallons of marine fuel oil collided with a ship Saturday afternoon in dense fog, creating an oil slick when one of the barge tanks holding 168,000 gallons sprang a leak.

Another two Clinton families narrowly missed being trapped by the mishap.

Southwest Elementary School third grade teacher Ashley Gaona, who lives at Weatherford, was so delayed by the incident that she didn’t get home until about 6:40 a.m. Monday, having just enough time to shower and go to school in Clinton without any sleep.
