Rabid skunks beginning to show up
Two skunks, one from Washita County and one from Beckham County, were confirmed as rabid late last weekend by the Oklahoma Department of Health.
Dr. Alvin Baumwart of Clinton said the skunk from Washita County was killed by a mother dog of one of his customers in the owner’s back yard. The dog had recently given birth to a litter of nine puppies, and because neither she nor the pups had been vaccinated for rabies, Baumwart said they now must be quarantined for six months or must all be euthanized. The owner will have to make the difficult choice of which it is.
Becky Coffman, an epidemiologist with ODH, said the mother dog killed the skunk Wednesday. Dr. Baumwart received the results of the rabies test about 4 p.m. Friday.
