County sends 35 inmates to DOC

Budget crisis looming
“That $47,000 is the pay - not including benefits - for 16 employees.” Bruce Peoples Custer County Sheriff

Seven more state inmates were shipped to the Department of Corrections yesterday from the Custer County Jail, leaving Sheriff Bruce Peoples with fewer than half the 61 he had less than three weeks ago.

It also leaves him, as well as Custer County commissioners and the County Excise Board, with a huge financial problem to grapple with as they get serious about next fiscal year’s budget which becomes effective July 1.

That’s because the $27 per day per inmate DOC was paying him to keep its prisoners amounted to $47,130 a month on average over the past year.
