Copper thieves costing money, endangering lives

Copper thieves are creating safety and fire hazards in rural areas of Custer and Washita counties, in addition to causing inconvenience for electrical consumers and significant economic losses for at least one electric cooperative.
“We’ve had a rash of meter loops stolen off poles with meters that service wells, fence chargers and old homesteads,” said Custer County Sheriff Bruce Peoples. “The perpetrators pull up with a chain, tie onto a pole that has conduit, yank it down and steal the copper.”
