Body found by farmer near Bessie

“I figure he passed away that night, the morning of the 2nd,” said Reeve. “It was so cold that night. We started searching for him about 2 o’clock. It was 5 degrees, and a strong north wind was blowing. I really can’t see how he could have made it much longer.

A body believed to be that of a man missing for 16 days was found Monday afternoon along a creek bank southwest of Bessie.

Washita County Sheriff Roger Reeve said there was no identification on the body but it was believed to be that of former Elk City resident Eugene Marshall Williams. He would have turned 63 last Wednesday, March 12, if he were still alive at that time.

However, Reeve does not believe he was. While it will be up to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the approximate date of death, Reeve said he and some of his staff had gone out searching for Williams about 2 a.m. Sunday, March 2, as soon as they learned he might be in Washita County.
