Area wheat crop dismal without rain
While Washita County has already begun its wheat plot tours, Custer County Extension Director Ron Wright said he won’t be conducting local wheat plot tours until March or April.
“We’re too dry,” he said. In fact, if he only has one tour, it might not be held until May.
Asked if the snow this winter had done the wheat crop much good, he said the area didn’t get enough snow in terms of moisture to have an impact. He said it takes about an inch of snow to make a tenth of an inch of moisture, which doesn’t wet the soil profile down very far.
