100 getting tutoring for third/fourth grade reading tests

Southwest Elementary School Principal Jason Bengs appears to be pretty confident, without being overly so, that his third graders will hold up well to the rigors of their somewhat controversial high-stakes reading test coming up April 16 and 17.

The mandate is that they must pass the test or be held back from fourth grade, although Bengs said a few of his young scholars could qualify for exemptions, if they needed them, to advance on to the fourth grade anyway.

Out of the close to 180 taking the state tests in the third and fourth grades at Southwest, Bengs said he has some 80 to 100 who are receiving extra tutoring in preparation for the examinations.
